San Bruno is historically very similar to the other areas throughout the San Mateo County. Originally, this land was of the Ohlone Indians. It was not settled by Europeans until 1775. When Captain Bruno Heceta came into the area, he named the land mass next to the side of the peninsula, Mount San Bruno, and this is where the name began. Prior to the Mexican War, the land changed hands a few times. And once the war had ended, the land once again changed hands. It was this period in which Darius Mills, the founder of the Bank of California purchased the land.
The San Bruno area really started to pop once the railroad made it into the area in 1863. The San Bruno House was built then to accommodate those who would be on the train. By the 1880s, a lot of the wilderness in the area was not functioning ranch land. Once the San Francisco earthquake hit, many people fled to San Bruno, and this is where the town started to thrive. It was in 1914 that San Bruno was recognized as an official town.
