Menlo Park

Bordered by San Francisco at the north and east, Redwood City to the west, and East Palo Alto to the south, Menlo Park is one of those that many people consider for their new home. This is located at the eastern edge of San Mateo County and is in the San Francisco Bay Area. The 2009 census has the area as having 33,690 people located in the Menlo Park area. The area was once known as “Sleepy Hollow of California,” and still has that small town feel to it.

History of Menlo Park

Menlo Park received its name in 1854 by Dennis J Oliver and D.C. McGlynn who purchased around 1,700 acres in the area. In fact, they named the area after their old home in Menlough on Lough Corrib, County Galway in Ireland. It was in 1863 when the train came through the area that took the Menlo Park name as well. The area was incorporated for the first time in 1874 but dissolved only two years later. It was permanently incorporated in 1927.

Landmarks and Recreation in Menlo Park

One landmark that stands out in the Menlo Park area is the railroad station. This is one of the oldest stations in the state that is still delivering passengers. Thus, it is a must see when you come to the area. Along with this, there are several recreational activities that individuals, as well as families, can enjoy. Some of these activities include:

Transportation in Menlo Park

The majority of those who live in Menlo Park are going to use their own personal commuting services. However, just as many people walk and bike to their destinations. Public wise, there is the free shuttle service that makes routes throughout the area. In addition, the train station located in Menlo Park is still one of the main commuting methods for those who live here.

Education

For those children who are in the area, they are going to be served by the Menlo Park City School District for the most part. However, some communities are served by the Ravenswood City School District, Sequoia Union High School District and the Las Lomitas Elementary School District.  The high school for the area is Menlo-Atherton High School.

There are a few Catholic schools in the area including St. Raymond Catholic Elementary and Nativity Elementary School. There is also the Saint Patrick’s Seminary and University in the area. Along with Menlo College and Menlo Schools, which are prep schools.

The 2000 census has the average household income $82,609. On average, the homes in the area cost around $1,828,371. The average rent in the area is $1,247.
